Asset Definition Overview

Asset Definition Overview

Asset Definitions are templates that are used to define the fields associated with specific kinds of assets at your plans. Asset definitions can be edited by way of adding additional properties. New Asset types can be derived from parent asset definitions. Asset definitions are made up of a name, description, icon, and a list of properties  specific to that asset class as well as a list of inherited properties from any parent asset definitions.

Inheritance

Parent asset definitions contain some inherent properties that cannot be changed or edited, however you can add additional properties.

The base class, Asset, is the only class users can not derive sub-classes from. However, users can still add additional properties to this class, which will be inherited by all of the other classes.

The Parent Classes include:

  • Mold
  • Die
  • Machine
  • Equipment
  • Insert

Asset Definition Properties

All classes have inherent properties that can not be changed by the user. Check the related documents for information about the default properties for each asset definition.

Accessing the Asset Definition Screen

To access the Asset Definition Screen:

1. Select the "Administration" button from the left hand navigation bar.

2. Select the "Asset Definitions" button.

Adding Asset Definitions

Asset definitions can be added to any of the parent classes except Asset. The asset definitions you create will inherit all of the properties of all of its ancestors. You can add custom fields to the asset definition after you initially create it.

1. Select the "+" symbol next to the asset definition you wish to derive from.

2. Fill in the mandatory name field and optionally fill in any of the other fields. The name field:

  • must not be blank
  • must not include any special characters (+/<>:*"&)
  • cannot have any consecutive spaces
  • has a maximum of 230 characters

3. Click "Save".

Adding Properties to an Asset Definition

You can add properties to existing asset definitions. If you add a property to an existing asset definition, and there are assets in the system associated with that asset definition, the new property will take on the default value until you provide a replacement. You can specify the default value when you create the new property type.

Property types include:

  • String
  • Number
  • Boolean
  • Date & Time

Properties can also be mandatory. The mandatory setting will enforce the requirement of having data in that field when a new asset of this class type is added. A mandatory property field can never be empty.

Numeric properties can have a valid number range associated with them. If a constraint is applied here, users will be unable to provide a value outside of this range when updating the value for this field.

To add a property

1. Select the asset definition you want to add a property to.

2. Scroll down, click the "Add Property" button below the "Property Definitions".

3. Fill out the mandatory "Name", "Display Name", and "Base Type" fields. Optionally, give the new property a description and set the "Mandatory" flag to indicate whether values are required for this property. Property names:

  • must not be empty
  • cannot contain spaces
  • cannot contain special characters(+/<>:*"&$')
  • cannot start with a number or -

4. Click the "Add" button.

Removing Properties You've Added

You can remove custom properties that you've added. You cannot remove the default properties associated with the asset definition.

To remove a property, open the asset definition and navigate to the custom property. Then click the trash-can icon at the right side of the property definition. After clicking the trash-can icon, the system will strike through the property "Name", "Display Name", "Base Type", "Description", and "Default Value" fields.

You may delete as many properties as you wish at a single time.

To complete the deletion of the property from the asset definition, click the "Save" button at the top of the asset definition screen.

After you click "Save", the property and all associated data will be removed from the system. There is no way to undo the deletion of a property.
